The Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM) will take over from the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) the Ops Wawasan border patrol after Aidilfitri, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar announced Monday.
He said that at present the MAF was in charge of the Perlis to Kelantan border with joint patrols by the two security forces under the Blue Ocean Strategy.
"It hasn't been determined for how long we'll take over the operation. Previously we took turns as the General Operations Force was needed to curb street crimes in the big cities, particularly those involved in the NKRA (National Key Results Area).
"We're also responsible for curbing smuggling and other possible threats at the border," he told reporters after paying a courtesy call on Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir at his office, here.
He said the police were alert for cross-border activities involving human trafficking and fireworks smuggling in view of Aidilfitri.
