Enlightening Muslims that efforts to unite the ummah (faithful) is a requirement in Islam, is among five recommendations made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to Alumni Al-Azhar Malaysia.
He said the requirement for Muslims to be united was not something that was a personal choice that could be discussed according to one's "appetite".
"In view of the membership of Alumni Al-Azhar Malaysia is made up of those who have in-depth knowledge on Islam, thus it is recommended five follow up actions be taken so that the Malaysian government can work together with the alumni in achieving this goal (unity of the ummah)," he said when opening the Al-Azhar Alumni Regional Seminar here Thursday.
Besides it (requirement on on the part for Muslims to strive for unity), Najib said the next was ensuring Muslims understood the importance of unity so much so it is all encompassing in their thinking and daily lives.
The third, Najib said, was for the alumni to organise programmes towards this end not on a piecemeal basis but an ongoing one.
As for the fourth, he called on the alumni to produce cadres who would continue this important agenda so that the younger generation would take up the cudgels as well.
"Fifthly, making it not only a local agenda but a global one so that the surrounding environment will act a a pressure factor for Muslims throughout the world to unite," he said.
Also present were PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom and Alumni Al-Azhar Malaysia International Group president, Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Fakhruddin Abdul Mokti.
