Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) can ensure that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will honour his promise to surrender the leadership to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim if he forms the government once again, said DAP organising secretary, Anthony Loke.
Loke said, as a party with 38 Members of Parliament (MPs), PKR could withdraw support if Dr Mahathir refused to keep his promise.
"Of course, people can question whether he (Dr Mahathir) will keep his promise. Our answer is that within the next six months, there will be a mechanism to ensure he would step down.
"PKR has 38 MPs. Without them, Dr Mahathir could not continue to rule.
"Each party (component of PH) will be able to overthrow the government if they withdraw their support. If that promise is not kept (by Dr Mahathir), PKR has the option to force an election at that time," he told Malaysiakini.
In the interview, Loke explained that the DAP tends to learn from past mistakes rather than point fingers at who was responsible for the fall of its government in February.
"Of course, if we blame each other, then everyone will blame each other. We are ready to learn from past mistakes and move on.
“If we want to blame each other, one side will blame Dr Mahathir, and the other side will blame the other. There will be no end.
“I am not saying he (Dr Mahathir) had not committed any mistakes. We have told him that he resigned without consulting anyone and this led to the fall of the government,” he said.
The DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) have reportedly agreed to nominate Dr Mahathir as Prime Minister while Anwar would hold the post of Deputy Prime Minister.
The partnership of Dr Mahathir and Anwar was proposed after the first proposal of pairing Anwar and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir was not agreed to by Warisan, an ally of Pakatan Harapan.
