Penang police have obtained new leads in their investigation into a number of shooting cases in the state.

State CID chief SAC Mazlan Kesah said however, he could not disclose the leads as it might hamper ongoing investigations.

"Through a special team that was formed to investigate the shootings in the state, we managed to obtain new leads which could assist in the investigations," he told Bernama.

Over the past month, a number of shootings had occurred in Penang.

In the latest incident yesterday, G. Santhana Samy, 30, sustained serious injuries after he was shot by unknown assailants in Jalan Mengkuang here.

He was in a car driven by his younger brother, and waiting for a friend at a road-shoulder near the traffic light junction when he was shot.

Commenting on the shooting on Monday, Mazlan said the victim told the police that the gunman was riding pillion on a motorcycle.

Santhana Samy, who sustained a gunshot wound in the thigh, was warded at the Kulim Hospital in Kedah.

Mazlan said the motive of the shooting could be grudge against the victim.
