Penang BN waits for decision on contest for Bukit Gelugor seat

The Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat by-election would be determined by the coalition's top leadership, said Penang BN chairman Teng Chang Yeow.

"The seat has traditionally been given to MCA to contest, so Penang BN will wait for the top leadership's decision," he said before attending a state BN meeting, held for the first time since the general election last year, here, Monday.

The Bukit Gelugor seat is vacant following the death of its incumbent MP, Karpal Singh from DAP, in a road accident at Km306.1 of the North-South Expressway, near Gua Tempurung in Kampar, Perak on April 17.

Karpal won the seat with a 41,778-vote majority in the 2013 general election, defeating the BN candidate, Teh Beng Yeam.

The Election Commission has fixed May 25 for polling, May 21 for early voting and May 12 for nomination of candidates.

Teng said the meeting on Monday would discuss the structure and running of BN at the state and divisional levels, besides the upcoming Bukit Gelugor by-election and a possible by-election in Permatang Pauh if Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's appeal against his sodomy conviction was rejected by the Appeals Court.
