The Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry has welcomed a proposal to form a water management department, specifically for the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory.
Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili described it as a good move which would help ensure sufficient water supply for Kuala Lumpur which is currently fully dependent on water resources from Selangor.
"It is better if it has its own water resources because if there are water problems in Selangor, at least there will be other resources which can be exploited for people in the Federal Territory.
"However, the proposal is still in the early stages and the Water Bill is still being updated," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby Wednesday.
He said the move did not contravene agreements signed with Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd as the ministry had its own water resources, including in the Federal Territory.
"So, whatever the Federal Territory can do to ensure there are water resources which can be exploited to ensure sufficient water supply, I feel this will not contravene any regulation or agreement.
"The water resources include those in Bukit Nanas, Putrajaya and Langat," added Ongkili.
Yesterday, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor announced the proposal to set up a water management department, specifically for the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory.
The bill for the proposal will be tabled in Parliament in March next year.
Tengku Adnan said the department would function as an independent body to manage water supply to households and industries in Kuala Lumpur, without depending on any other party. -- Bernama
