Nga 'biadap' for questioning Syariah police - NGO

A non-governmental organisation has called Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming ‘biadap’ or uncouth for questioning the setting up of a syariah police unit in Malaysia.

Malaysian Muslim Solidarity political bureau secretary, Ustaz Hazizi Ab Rahman condemned Nga who published a tweet on January 26th, criticising the proposal and questioning if Malaysia is to become a Taliban state.

“Nga’s linking of our country to the Taliban is an insult to Islam. He is associating syariah with violence,” he said in a press release.

“His statement is akin to supporting the demands of Comango (Coalition of Malaysian NGOs in the Universal Periodic Review Process) to abolish syariah law," he added while demanding Nga to clarify his statement.

Recently, the Home Ministry and Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) proposed to set up a syariah police unit to help enforce all laws on Islamic criminal offences.

Meanwhile, the Jakim director-general Datuk Othman Mustafa said the setting up of the unit will be finalised soon.

The Malay Mail also reported that Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the unit will not take over jurisdiction of religious enforcement from state agencies, adding that his ministry and Jakim are fully aware that religious enforcement comes under jurisdiction of the state.
