A welder found a newborn baby girl in Lapangan Perdana 19, near the new shophouses in Taman Lapangan Setia, here, Monday.
Chong Lean Fatt, who was working in the shophouse area found the baby in an alley at 10.20am.
He said initially, he heard a baby's cries. However, after searching the area, he did not find any baby and continued with his work.
"The baby's cries were then heard by my friend who is a supervisor. We searched the area behind the shophouses and were shocked to see a baby with bare body and the umbilical cord still attached lying on the tarred road," he said.
He then called the police before the baby was sent to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.
Ipoh deputy OCPD Supt Ahmad Termizi Abdul Haq confirmed the incident and said the baby was not injured and was in a stable condition.
"We have not identified the baby's race and we believe the baby was born only three hours earlier elsewhere, before being abandoned at the location where it was found," he said.
