A newborn baby was found by a member of the congregation at the entrance of Masjid Kampung Alai at 4.30am on Sunday, wrapped in a blanket and placed in a basket.
Nor Azizan Md Nordin, 50, said he found the boy when he was alone in the mosque to perform prayers.
"While praying, I heard someone push the fence in front of the entrance to the mosque, before I heard a baby crying. At first I thought it was an illusion but was surprised when I found the baby on the staircase leading to the mosque," he said when met on Sunday.
He patted the baby to calm him down before the baby stopped crying and fell asleep 15 minutes later, he said, adding that he lodged a report at the Kandang police station soon after.
Meanwhile, State Criminal Investigation Department chief, ACP Kamaluddin Kassim said the baby was now in the care of the Welfare Department.
Police are conducting a thorough investigation to trace the parents of the baby. Anyone with information regarding the incident can contact investigating officer, Inspector Afna Ibrahim at 06-2854222.
