The RapidKL monorail stalled today due to a punctured tyre, trapping hundreds passengers about almost an hour.

The incident occurred about 100 metres away from the Chow Kit station along Jalan Raja Laut at about 6.30pm.

The fire and rescue department was called to the scene and proceeded to evacuate some of the 169 passengers via a turntable ladder (TTL).

“When we reached, we managed to evacuate 20 victims. But then we helped to transfer the passengers when RapidKL sent their backup train,” said Titiwangsa fire and rescue station chief Roslan Mohd Sidek.

According to a spokesperson for the railway service Prasarana Negara Berhad Media Affairs manager Azhar Ghazali, no one was injured during the incident.

“One of the rubber tyres punctured, it could not move freely and we had to stop the train,” he said.

Azhar said that a backup train was sent to the scene and was connected with the stalled train through a 'coupling exercise'.

“The passengers then moved to the other train and were sent to the nearest station,” he added.

Azhar said that RapidKL was trying its best to resume operations.

“There were no injuries, everyone was safe and sound."

On August 17, 2012, the monorail service was disrupted for an hour along the Imbi station to Bukit Bintang. The disruption happened just five days after a prior incident which took place in front of the Siew Dor Flats in Brickfields.
