"Preliminary police investigation found that the car might have skidded and plunged into the river," he said when contacted.

The deceased were identified as Luqman Jainie, Abu Izzani Abu Bakar, Nik Shakir Zufayri and Muhammad Asyraf Isa.

They were all 21 years old.

It is understood that the four were travelling from Kota Tinggi in Johor to Terengganu. They departed their home in Bandar Seri Alam here last Wednesday around 9.30pm.

Police believed the victims were on vacation and had used the Johor Bahru-Kota Tinggi-Mersing-Rompin route to a destination which had yet to be identified.

However, two hours after their departure, they could no longer be contacted by family members.
