Malaysia among top 20 desired countries for expat life

New challenge, interesting culture, and cost effective are some of the reasons why Malaysia is ranked among the Top 20 of desired place for expat life, according to the Expat Explorer survey commissioned by HSBC Expat.
Malaysia is ranked 19th most desired destination for expatriates from 34 countries, while neighbouring ASEAN countries Singapore and Thailand are ranked second and seventh, respectively.
Expats looking for a challenge are among the most likely to head to Malaysia with 49 percent of Malaysia-based respondents saying this reason motivated their move.
More than half of the respondents also described Malaysia as a culturally interesting place for them and their families.
Nearly half of expats in Malaysia said they find the local language difficult, but 56 percent seem to embrace the sense of adventure with them trying to learn and use the local language.
In terms of cost effectiveness, 54 percent of expats in Malaysia said their accommodation in the country is of a higher standard than what they enjoyed in their home country, and 34 percent are now spending less on housing than before. Thirty-seven percent spend less on utilities bills.
Meanwhile, top-ranked Switzerland emerged as a destination to advance career prospects and receive a healthy salary.
According to the survey, 25 percent of expats in Switzerland earn more than US$200,000 per annum. Half of the expats there also said they are satisfied with the local economy. Other factors which ranked high included better quality of life and better education.
Other Asian countries like China, India and Hong Kong are hotspots for high-earning expats.
Nearly 9,300 expats from around the world took part in the survey, sharing their views on the quality of life, financial wellbeing and the ease of raising a family abroad.
Head of HSBC Expat Dean Blackburn said this year’s Expat Explorer league table shows that there are many countries that offer a good balance, providing expats with a rewarding and exciting experience.
“While Asia continues to excel as a region for those looking for higher salaries, the Middle East draws career minded expats and New Zealand offers a great opportunity for those looking for quality of life and a good place to raise a family.
“Asia is emerging as a hotspot with seven countries in the top 10 being in Asia, namely Singapore, China, Bahrain, Thailand, Taiwan, India and Hong Kong. financial wellbeing, and the ease of raising a family abroad,” he said.
