KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) has denied a report that the egg supply in the state has run out.
Its director, Saharuddin Mohd Kia said, however, his team does acknowledge that there is a limited stock of certain grades of eggs supplied by producers to wholesalers and supermarkets, which is currently about 50 per cent less than usual.
"It is not that we have completely run out of egg stocks in Terengganu as alleged. There is a supply of eggs, however, there is a limited supply of certain grades of eggs. Some consumers concentrate on buying single-grade eggs and trays of eggs only.
"However, the eggs that are sold in a packet of 10 are still available in shops and supermarkets," he said when contacted by Bernama.
Saharuddin said this when asked to elaborate on a report in a local daily, today, regarding the egg supply issue in Terengganu.
He said the egg supply shortage only affected certain grades of eggs for now and it was a national issue interrelated with various factors including the increase in prices of animal feed as well as the weather conditions affecting many states, and not just in Terengganu.
In the meantime, he said the lack of egg stocks was also attributed to the increase in demand for the foodstuff due to the Chinese New Year festival period.
"To help overcome this problem, there are supermarkets that do self-control and limit the number of purchases. For example, each buyer is only allowed to buy two trays of eggs," he added.
