He said on average, the sanitary landfill in Sungai Udang received between 850 to 1,500 tonnes of waste per day.
Melaka needs a new landfill site urgently as the Sungai Udang sanitary landfill is expected to last only a month before reaching full capacity, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron.
He hoped the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government would quickly approve the application for a new landfill made by the state government earlier.
"The best solution to this problem is to open a new, high-technology landfill," he said after officiating the closing of the 'Seminar Bersih Budaya Melaka' at Dewan Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh near here, Tuesday.
He said on average, the sanitary landfill in Sungai Udang received between 850 to 1,500 tonnes of waste per day.
Commenting on other developments, Idris said the state government would propose to the Mayor of Melaka to review the by-laws to impose fines on people who dump garbage everywhere especially in public places.
"It is hoped that this move will educate people not to throw rubbish all over the place," he said.
