Highway authorities have reported higher volume of traffic on major highways as city folk head for their hometowns and villages in view of the public and weekend holidays.
The increase in traffic was reported particularly on the North-South Expressway and the East Coast Expressway. Prophet Muhammad's Birthday today and Christmas tomorrow are public holidays.
A spokesman of the Highway Traffic Control Centre at Plus Expressways Sdn Bhd said a higher volume of traffic was reported on the north-bound stretches between Rawang Selatan and the Rawang Rest and Service Area; Lembah Beringin and Tanjung Malim and Slim River and Sungkai.
He also said that a lorry caught fire on the left lane at Km21.7 of the stretch between Kota Damansara and Bukit Lanjan at about 9am.
"The fire was put out but the lorry has yet to be towed away. Traffic is moving slowly at that stretch," he told Bernama.
A spokesman of the Malaysian Highway Authority said traffic was reported to be moving slowly on the East Coast Expressway between Gombak and Karak near the Gombak toll plaza.
