A Form Three student suspected to have been afflicted with leptospirosis after swimming at Jeram Mengaji, Selising, Pasir Puteh, last week, died Tuesday.
The victim, Muhamad Fikri Farizaq Mukhtar, 15, a student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pak Badol, Bachok, died at 10am while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Hospital Tengku Anis, Pasir Puteh.
The victim's father, Mukhtar Awang, 58, said his son was confirmed positive with leptospirosis after he had gone to the rapids with three friends on Aug 27.
"My son came down with fever a few days after returning from the rapids and on Sunday we took him to Klinik Kesihatan Mahligai and he was administered drips after suspecting dengue before being allowed to return.
"But in the evening, my son had chills and shortness of breath. We again took him to the same clinic before he was sent to the Tengku Anis Hospital," he said when met at his house in Kampung Jerus, Selising.
He said before being sent to the hospital, his son vomited blood and looked very weak.
His remains were buried at the Muslim cemetery in Kampung Jerus yesterday evening.
