Five orphaned siblings receive SOCSO benefits

The Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) today presented Dependant Benefits in the form of monthly pension to five siblings who lost their parents at a road accident in Jalan Chan Sow Lin in May.
Kuala Lumpur SOCSO director Mohamad Asri Ngosman said the siblings would receive RM1,596 as the first payment, counted one day after their parents' death, with monthly payment of RM1,260 from July.
He said SOCSO also handed out funeral benefits amounting to RM3,000 for both parents as they had been its contributors.
"The pension paid by SOCSO will continue until the children reach the age of 21," he told the media, in conjunction with Socso's visit to the residence of the five children in Taman Desa Cheras here.
On May 24, their parents, Jefri Mohd Zain, 50, and Noorsalawati Ibrahim, 40, were killed on the spot in an accident at the Jalan Chan Sow Lin junction, off Jalan Loke Yew.
The couple were hit by a lorry after their motorcycle skidded while on the way to work.
The couple is survived by children, Muhammad Haikal, 16, Fatin Adlina, 14, Muhammad Aidil, 10, Nursyamimi, four, and Nur Auni Syafia, three.
In another development, Mohamad Asri said, between January and May this year, SOCSO paid RM12.25 million to members who suffered temporary disability while another RM8.55 million was paid to those who had permanent disability.
He said in the same period, Kuala Lumpur SOCSO paid RM563,903 as invalidity pension to contributors who had permanent ill health while RM47,109 was paid as dependant benefits.
