Double-decker bus services in six routes identified as dangerous have been suspended temporarily, said deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi.
The six routes are Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands, Bukit Tinggi, Bukit Fraser, Gunung Jerai and Bukit Larut.
Abdul Aziz said the suspension is expected to take effect beginning next month once the two weeks notice is served to the express bus owners.
"The double-decker bus service for these six routes will be stopped temporarily until the weaknesses are identified and rectified. I have already instructed the SPAD and RTD to find a solution to the double-decker buses," he said referring to the The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and Road Safety Department (RTD) .
Abdul Aziz also said that beginning today, all express bus drivers must undergo urine tests daily at bus terminals, following the several cases of fatal accidents recently.
He told reporters that previously, this was only done during festive season but now it will be done on a daily basis to ensure the drivers are fit to drive.
He said the urine tests will be carried out jointly by the RTD and the National Anti-Drug Agency involving some 8,600 bus drivers.
He said those found to have failed the tests will have their licences suspended immediately.
