Datuk Ahmad Maslan said up to yesterday, 8,883 companies had registered for the GST.
The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (KDRM) expects 123,000 companies to register for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as of Sept 30.
Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan said to achieve the target, the department will implement five steps, including increasing the number of advertisements in the print and electronic media, apart from early reminders to the 63,000 companies registered for the Sales and Services Tax (SST) to now register for the GST.
He said up to yesterday, 8,883 companies had registered for the GST, with 36 registrations by post and the rest online.
"The online registration takes only five minutes," he told reporters after a working visit to the GST Processing Centre at the Customs Complex here Wednesday.
Ahmad advised applicants to prepare the relevant company information, including the sales value, before registering, to facilitate the process.
