Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai wants stern action to be taken against those responsible for the crash involving a "lorry hantu" (unregistered lorry) which occurred in front of a school in Bandar Damai Perdana, Kajang, in which two students were killed, last Thursday.
He said the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has been instructed to investigate the incident and monitor the presence of unregistered lorries.
The unregistered lorries are only for use at construction sites and they cannot be outside the construction sites as they have no insurance coverage or road tax, he told reporters after the opening of Wisma Huazong in Seri Kembangan here today.
In the 12.50pm incident, two female students, both 13 years old, were killed, while a hawker was injured when they were hit by a van which was rammed by the lorry in front of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Damai Perdana.
Meanwhile, advisor to the Ministry of Transport, Tan Sri M. Kayveas wants RTD to carry out continuous monitoring on unregistered lorries to avoid a similar incident.
A study should be conducted on the presence of these lorries, he told reporters after chairing a MyPPP Supreme Council meeting at the party headquarters here today.
Meanwhile, Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, told Bernama here today that legal action should also be taken against owners of lorries which were caught violating traffic and road regulations.
