JAKARTA: Indonesia recorded more than 20,000 COVID-19 cases, marking the highest number since the detection of the country's first case in March 2020.
According to the data on the official Twitter account of the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management @BPNB_Indonesia today, 20,574 new COVID-19 cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours for a total of 2,053,995 cases.
A total of 1,826,504 patients were cured, and 355 died -- bringing the total death toll to 55,949 people.
The increase in new cases over the past week has been linked to 'balik kampung' (travelling to hometown) during the last Aidilfitri celebrations, and the rapid spread of the Delta variant.
