Allegations of corruption as being the cause of the recent flash flood in the capital holds no water, according to the
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
As such, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said there was no element of corruption involved in the contracts awarded for drainage works and river cleaning which caused the flash flood.
"The first thing is, there is no element of corruption involved... we give contracts to the contractors on pre-order basis.
"If the contractors are not up to standard, we will just terminate them," he said after attending the excellent award presentation for students at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tinggi Setapak here today.
He said this when asked for an update on the MACC investigation into the flash flood incident which was alleged to have occurred as a result of corruption.
On whether there would be further investigation into the cause of flash flood in Kuala Lumpur, Tengku Adnan replied in the negative.
In the May 12 flash flood, almost 100 vehicles were trapped at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim (formerly known as Jalan Duta) and Jalan Bangsar.
Tengku Adnan also explained to Bernama that the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) findings had shown that flash flood in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim was due to heavy development work in that area, as well as torrential heavy downpour on that day.
As for Jalan Pantai Baharu which is located near the University Malaya (UM), he said the UM retention basin was found to have been filled with mud and silt due to heavy development work at the university, causing it to overflow.
Tengku Adnan said the ministry was also looking into installing the stormwater retention system here to reduce a recurrence of flash flood.
He said it would include replacing old pipes, installing water pumps as well as building retention ponds and road diversions.
