Corbyn or May, strong ties between UK and Malaysia will continue - Vicki Treadell

The strong engagements between Malaysia and the United Kingdom (UK) will continue to be strengthened after the British elections are concluded.

British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Vicki Treadell said although the UK government had changed leaders before this, the cooperation in investment, trade, education and others had continued to strengthen.

“Many Malaysians might be looking towards the outcome of this election that I would like to remind Malaysians that our people to people links, the relationship between Britain and Malaysia does not change.”

“We have been friends, allies and partners for a very long time. Our commitment to each other in trade and investment and educational ties are very strong.”

The ongoing United Kingdom elections proves to be a tight race between the Conservative Party (297) and the Labour Party (252) (at time of reporting).

According to the British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Vicki Treadell, there is a high voter turn out with 75%-80% of registered voters taking to the poll this time around.

She said there is a higher number of young people voting, indicating youth engagement, a sign of democracy at its best.

Treadell assured that the new British government will continue to work together with the Malaysian government in key areas, including trade and education.

She pointed out that Malaysian students make up the second largest international student population in the UK.

The UK will maintain its close ties with Malaysia, given the historical bond that both nations share, she said.

"The UK looks forward to Malaysia's 60th Independence Day, a celebration that also marks great progress between both nations," she added.
