A 3-month-old baby was among two victims found dead in a fire at Kampung Nelayan, Teluk Kumbar here early this morning.

The two victims, Nazri Zainal Abidin, 29 and his child Damia Auliah Salsabila died after failing to be rescued as they were trapped in their bedroom.

Five other family members including the victim’s wife however managed to escape with injuries.

Seri Balik Pulau Fire and Rescue Department chief of operation, Norashikin Md Isa, said they received a distress call at 2.17am and rushed to the location.

Search and rescue operation was held as soon as the fire was brought under control.

The first victim was found at 2.50am while the second was found at 4.32am.


Both bodies were later sent to the Balik Pulau hospital for post-mortem while those injured were taken to the Penang Hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

In describing the incident the victim’s mother-in-law, Che Gayah Mat Rawi, 76, said that she woke up after hearing noises outside the house.

She said, realising that the house was on fire, she immediately woke her three grandsons in effort to save themselves.

She added that her son-in-law and her daughter who were asleep upstairs also ran out.

Her son-in-law later ran back in after realising that his baby was still in the house.

The fire however burnt the house claiming two victims in its wake.
