Astro Kasih - the employee organisation of Astro - on Satuday morning (April 13) created a new Guinness World Record by clocking a total of 168 non-stop hours in its successful attempt to set the “Longest Underwater Coral Cleanup” mark.
The seven-day attempt started on April 6 at Taman Marin Tunku Abdul Rahman, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
As many as 134 volunteers, comprising international and local divers-- including Astro employees-- notched 1,120 dives from 224 dive sites, collecting a total of 3,171 kg of waste and underwater debris throughout this one week CSR programme.
The final group of divers who went underwater at 7.45am on Saturday resurfaced at 8.45am with a final haul of trash collected from the sea bed.
The "Beautiful Malaysia" CSR project aims to create greater awareness of marine conservation as well as promote ecotourism among Malaysians.
Astro Awani journalist Tan Su Lin who together with cameraman Samsul Kamal Abdul Latip stationed at the divesite for the weeklong record attempt created her own record of sorts. She became the first Awani BJ to conduct a "standupper" in a wetsuit!
