“The police should respond to the report made by Suhakam and publicized the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) so that the public knows what are their procedures.”
That was the suggestion made by Bersih co-chairman Datuk S. Ambiga on the Bersih 3.0 rally report made by Suhakam.
The report said that the police couldn’t identify the officers in the video that were presented as evidence and according to Ambiga, it shows that the police did not assist the commission enough.
“Among the important findings from the report are the issue on the use of disproportionate force on the participants, not enough warning issued to them by the police, physical assault on them as well as on media practitioners.
“Another issue is that there were many reports filed but there were no investigations carried. So I think the police should respond by investigating these reports filed in relation to the incidents of violence,” Ambiga added.
When contacted by Astro Awani, Ambiga cited paragraph 72 from the report.
“In paragraph 72 from the report said that there were use of disproportionate force and the panel cannot find any real justification for the action and it appears that the police are driven by anger, frustration and the need to inflict punishment than by duty,” she said.
According to her, the police should make suggestions on the proper amount of compensation the people who were physically assaulted should get.
“I feel this is a vindication for all of the ordinary supporters of Bersih and the police should give them compensation.
“This is because, at the end of the day, we must remember that many people suffered during the rally and in my opinion, this report is good,” she added.
