Watch: Power Rangers movie teaser trailer

THE first teaser trailer for the upcoming Power Rangers movie was released Saturday in conjunction with the New York Comic Con.

The teaser does not steer too far from its original 1990s television series: five high school teenagers in Angel Grove with special powers going against aliens.

They are all apparently misfits: Blue Ranger Billy (RJ Cyler) and Yellow Ranger Trini (Becky G) are bullied, Pink Ranger Kimberly (Naomi Scott) craves acceptance from her friends, Black Ranger Zack (Ludi Lin) is a loner, and Red Ranger Jason (Dacre Montgomery) is an angry teen with domestic problems.

Despite the similarities, Lionsgate has its own interpretation on this reboot. For one, no more spandex for the Rangers as they opt for armoured suits, Iron Man-style.

Several Hollywood bigwigs are also featured in this movie, to boost the star power. Breaking Bad main man Bryan Cranston is the Power Rangers' mentor Zordon, comedy star Bill Hader voices robot Alpha 5, and Pitch Perfect star Elizabeth Banks plays the villain Rita Repulsa.

Power Rangers will be released in March 2017 worldwide.
