Local rapper-turned-filmmaker Namewee has social media buzzing again with the release of a new video.
This time around, a rather subdued and less controversial spoof on reality singing competitions and Malaysian singer, Shila Amzah.
In the six minute video titled ‘High Pitched', Namewee ‘performed’ on stage, belting out lyrics like ‘you love watching singers compete desperately for titles’ and ‘you love it when singers are struggling on stage’ - where he caustically poked fun at a certain mega popular reality singing contests in China, where Shila was first catapulted to fame and fast becoming a household name.
Clips of Sheila and dramatic reaction shots of audience and judges from the shows were also featured in the video.
The six-minute video had garnered over a staggering two million views on You Tube since it was published on the site on November 1.
Namawee gained popularity in 2007 after releasing a controversial song fused with the national anthem Negaraku, which had a strong anti-government undertone.
His frankness and notoriety almost certainly guarantees that any works boasting the 'Namewee stamp' will go under Censor Board scissors.
Unperturbed, Namewee went on to direct local hits including 'Nasi Lemak 2.0' and 'Hantu Gangster' and produce a string of satire videos touching on controversial issues in Malaysia.
