Universal has revealed the first glimpse of its highly-anticipated remake of 1980s animated show "Jem and the Holograms."

The live-action adaptation of the cartoon steers away from the original story, but focuses on the journey of small-town girl Jerrica Benton, who is catapulted to fame when her sister Kimber posts a YouTube video online of her playing music.

The clip is a hit and Benton and her three sisters are soon picked up by record company Starlight where they begin a transformation to become the stars of the band 'Jem and the Holograms'.

The 1980s cartoon by comparison saw Jerrica Benton as a record manager, who after inheriting a computer which allows her to create hologram projections, uses these to live out her dream of becoming a famous rockstar with her friends.

The film, to be released in December 2015, is directed by Jon M. Chu ("Step-Up") and also stars Molly Ringwald, Aurora Perrineau, Hayley Kiyoko, Ryan Guzman and Juliette Lewis.

'Jem and the Holograms' will be featured in Malaysian cinemas nationwide on Nov 26, 2015.
