A Malaysian and three Taiwanese are among those injured during a stampede during a New Year’s Eve countdown party in Shanghai on Wednesday.

The incident which left 35 people (10 males and 25 females) dead and 48 injured was caused when people tried to pick fake money thrown from a building, Straits Times reported.

The 11.35pm incident took place along the historic Shanghai Bund where at least 150,000 gathered to usher in the New Year.

The Chinese government said those injured have been taken to three local hospitals for treatment.

Chinese President Xi Jinping had demanded an immediate investigation into the incident.
