The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad (NSTP) is set to stop the company’s printing operations of two plants in Ajil, Terengganu and Senai, Johor.
The decision was a part of consolidation plan to ensure the company remains strong in today's challenging environment due to readers shifting their news consumption online, a statement explained.
NSTP employees affected by the move would receive fair compensation which exceeded the limit under labour laws.
The company would also provide outplacement services to assist them in the process.
The print media industry faced significant challenges due to dwindling publication circulation as readers opt for online platforms. This has also led to decreasing number in advertisement expenses.
According to the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) Malaysia, national newspaper circulation between July and December 2015 was 12 percent lower compared to the same period in 2014.
