Malaysian content providers have clinched 18 deals worth RM132.1 million at the recently concluded World Audio Visual Trade Exhibition (MIPCOM) here, surpassing the target of RM110 million set by the National Film Development Corp Malaysia (Finas).
Finas Marketing Director Datuk Fauzi Ayob said the rising acceptance of Malaysian creative content at MIPCOM was a testimony of its quality and augured well for the future of the industry at home.
He said the achievements were encouraging as the sales of various creative content products and co-production agreements had risen from RM107 million in 2012 to RM108 million last year and RM132.1 million this year.
Among hot deals inked by Malaysian companies were that of Infinite Motion Sdn Bhd which had been slated to co-produce kids animated features worth RM26 million.
Lemon Sky (Malaysia) signed a deal to co-produce an animation entitled 'Bubble Boy' worth RM15 million with an Australian visual effects and animation company while United Studios (Malaysia) won a contract to sell its animated feature, 'Ribbit' in Indonesia.
Global Station and Astro will co-produce a 148-episode telenovela entitled 'A Love to Remember' worth RM20 million with TV Azteca, the world's largest producer of Spanish language programme.
The Malaysian delegation, comprising over 50 companies, was led by Communications and Multimedia Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim.
The annual exhibition, which unites creative content sellers and buyers from all over the world, is a strategic platform for Malaysian companies to showcase their products.
The four-day MIPCOM from Oct 13 entails a screening session, meetings and a conference involving 18,000 practitioners from the entertainment industry from 120 countries.
The Malaysian delegation to MIPCOM was co-organised by Finas, Multimedia Development Corp and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, in association with the Malaysia External Trade Development Corp, Tourism Malaysia and the Creative Content Association of Malaysia.
