He's just restructured his entire company, but Google founder Larry Page hasn't lost his sense of humor.
He's just restructured his entire company, but Google founder Larry Page hasn't lost his sense of humor.
Hidden in Page's letter announcing the creation of Alphabet, Google Inc.'s new parent company, is an inside joke comparing the restructure to the sprawling technology company at the center of HBO comedy series Silicon Valley.
In the series, Google-like company Hooli creates a comically terrible moonshot division called XYZ, led by "Sole Head Dreamer" Nelson “Big Head” Bighetti. Hooli XYZ's greatest achievement ends up being a backfiring potato canon that wreaks havoc on employees.
The online home of Alphabet is the strange-sounding abc.xyz. If you click the period after "drone delivery effort" in the eighth paragraph of Alphabet CEO Larry Page's letter at abc.xyz, you'll be sent to HBO's fake website for Hooli XYZ, a hidden acknowledgement by Alphabet that it knows what critics will be thinking.
The more predictable alphabet.com is already being used by Alphabet International, a mobility services company helping large corporations manage employee transportation. Alphabet International is a member of the BMW Group.
