The Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) board of directors has made its recommendation on the potential successor to outgoing Governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz.

"We have made the recommendation and the government will make the decision and submit the name to the Agong," Zeti told reporters on the sidelines of the Wharton Global Forum 2016 here today.

Zeti has been BNM Governor for 16 years.

"Just be patient. (It will be announced) very soon," she said when asked who would be her preferred choice between Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, and Datuk Mohamed Ibrahim, the current Deputy Governor.

Besides the two, the list of potential candidates includes Malaysian Ambassador to the United States Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin, Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah and Deputy BNM Governor Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus.

Zeti was also asked whether Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is also Finance Minister, was at Bank Negara yesterday.

"Yes, there was a briefing, we give such briefings just before the annual report. It was a two-hour briefing, one and a half hours was given by myself," she said.

Among others, the discussions revolved around assessment, policies and how Malaysia could build its resilience for the future and not just for now, Zeti added.
